Bilingual Resource and Dictionary Generation Environment (BRIDGE)
Desktop Solutions for Global Communications
Project Objective: To decrease the time needed (from months to days) to turn references such as paper dictionaries or gazeteers into searchable electronic resources by combining the latest computer technology with a small amount of human assistance.
Project Definition:
- How dictionaries are created:
- 1) The dictionary is scanned into the computer using Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
- 2) The user corrects OCR errors in a small sample of data (a few pages). The system learns from these corrections and automatically corrects the rest of the dictionary.
- 3) The user marks a few entries to indicate component fields (e.g. head word, part of speech, example of use, latitude or longitude fields). The system automatically marks the rest of the entries in a similar manner.
Project Importance: Foreign language professionals need dictionaries, even in obscure languages, to do their work. This BRIDGE process lets us give them useful, searchable resources, on demand, when they need them.
Project Background: The need for this project was identified through discussions with USG professionals who deal with situations requiring rapid ramp-up.

- An enhanced version of the BRIDGE prototype software system and hardware configuration.
- Delivery of BRIDGE development platform to USG customers.
