Task-based NLP Evaluation for Multi-Media Environments
Translation and Technology
Project Objective: To measure performance improvement in translation from utilizing an automated translation aid versus creating an un-aided translation.
Project Definition:
- The translation aid is a set of integrated tools that provides:
- A view of a video clip to be translated
- An automatically generated speech-to-text transcript of the audio
- An ability to navigate the audio/video via the transcript
- Automatic highlighting of person, place, and organization names
- An area in which to type the text translation
Project Importance: In the 21st century work environment, technology can play an important support role. This study investigates the on-the-job utility of a potential real world application for NVTC translators.
Project Background:
- Human translators are essential, especially when it comes to understanding details, nuances, and complex subject matter in general. If translation aids can handle more mundane portions of translation tasks, for example, by providing transcripts in the source language, human translators might be able to focus more productively on nuanced or challenging areas. Ultimately, translation aids have the potential to speed the translation process and to improve translation accuracy. The study's importance goes beyond translation of broadcast video in that we are measuring the required accuracy of speech-to-text tools for extension to translation of informal speech.

- Languages: Chinese and Arabic
- Translators: Native and non-native speakers
- Translation environments: Transcript plus navigation controls, transcript minus navigation controls, no transcript or navigation controls
- Transcript word error rates: Low and medium
- Evaluation measures: Translation time and accuracy

- Pilot testing of set-up completed in May 2006
- Fall 2006 data collection planned for:
- Local Washington, D.C. area
- Salt Lake City, UT; Monterey, CA; and Ft. Lewis, WA
Project Products: CASL will develop a video documenting the utility of the translation aid based on the experiments in Chinese and Arabic. This will be suitable for decision-makers.
